Dave is al meer dan 42 jaar actief in de somatiek, nadat hij er eerst zijn weg in had gevonden door zijn eigen bachelorprogramma, somatopsychologie, te ontwikkelen aan de Universiteit van Maryland. Vervolgens behaalde hij een diploma in fysiotherapie aan de Stanford University en somatische psychologie aan het California Institute of Integral Studies.
